3 little purple moths
1 black butterfly with white tips
I didn’t really want to leave this morning. I was a little stiff and homesick but once I got going this morning it was pretty good. James and I (well my pace that he’s following) has gotten faster. We took a break half way and waited on papa, but we spent a total of 5 hours hiking today. We played “Who’s the king/queen of this little pile of asphalt”, it was pretty cool, we fenced with our hiking poles. James named his mountain Blackmore and mine was Mount Quiet-bottom. We saw 3 wood-peckers today all at once. Then 3 seconds later we saw a squirrel sprint across the trail in front of us. We got to camp pretty much on time and I ate soooo much food. My appetite is starting to pick up now. Grits with jerky mixed in is on the menu for breakfast.
4/3/14 – Day 6
1 Green, grey and white bird that make weird noises – it played in our little stream at camp
1 Chocolate Lab
Today we woke up a little late. I made grits and jerky for breakfast which wasn’t enough food and wasn’t a good mixture. I was very low on energy about 7 miles in today but it went by quickly. We took a break at Blue Mountain Shelter and ate lunch. Once we got to the bottom of the Blue Mountain to Unicoi Gap we found out first trail magic! This guy, who I believe his trail name was Bowtie, hiked in 2010. He gave us some good advice about keeping going and he told us that the knee and foot pain never goes away. Bowtie and his parents were set up handing out lots of snacks and sodas. Bowtie’s mom made us a sausage and bacon biscuit (except it wasn’t really a biscuit it was on a hotdog bun) with mustard and pickles. We hiked on up the next mountain to a camp site right after Unicoi and washed up in the beautiful stream. After we ate dinner Bowtie joined us for the night. His thru-stories were very interesting. He hiked the 40 mile challenge without planning to, he just got up and started hiking with the group he wanted to keep up with. The weather here is about to get bad. I don’t know how I feel about the rain yet. I’m getting a pretty funky tan already. Our group we had started has moved on a little farther so we’ll just have to catch them later!
4/4/14 – Day 7
2 purple moths
Coming out of the campsite this morning was rough. I broke down a couple of times because I’m tired and needing some comfort. My butt feels like it’s on fire. Chaffing sucks. The rain was threatening to come down all day but never really did. We stopped at Swag of the Blue Ridge and ate grits and snacks. Then Cape came along the trail, we thought he was way ahead of us. (Kid can’t avoid town! He’s resupplied everyday for 2 days now) lol. He went on ahead of us though. We’re almost done with GA now. It’s driving me plus the company of James to keep going. The mental game out here is the hardest. We’re going into Hiawassee tomorrow. Dairy Queen here I come!
4/5/14 – Day 8
1 Groundhog (outside the hotel)
When we woke up this morning Papa was saying “See you guys later!” He was ready to get to town I guess! When we started to get closer to town we saw some guys doing some trail upkeep with chainsaws! Bless the souls of the men who carry chainsaws out miles to saw down some trees out of the way for me to walk this trail. I could hear a stream so as we got closer I wanted to check it out and as we came up on it I saw Coke and Dr. Pepper in the stream! Wooo! Trail magic is amazing. I don’t know who you are that left those cokes but thanks. As soon as we got down to the parking lot Grandma was pulling in with a trunk full of snacks and a cooler of coke for her own trail magic. Pass it on! Then 10 minutes later James’ mom pulled in with everyone in the car and then Chad, Heather and the boys pulled in too! Everyone came up to congratulate us and Papa for (almost) completing Georgia and also for Papa’s birthday that is next Wednesday. Happy Birthday Papa! We all went to the hotel and hung out for a little while, then we went to Dairy Queen. I ate a mushroom swiss burger and my fries plus other’s fries lol. After eating we went back to the hotel to visit, sing happy birthday, and eat cupcakes. Everyone went on home and we took care of stuff we needed to in town and now we’re just hanging out in the hotel room getting ready for our hike out of town tomorrow.
